Ross Lovegrove designs first wooden chair to mark Bernhardt Design's 125th Anniversary

Olá!
Recently, I came across an article on DEZEEN.COM entitled Ross Lovegrove Designs first wooden chair to mark Bernhardt's 125 Anniversary.

To celebrate Bernhardt Design's 125 Anniversary, the company commissioned designers -
Ross Lovegrove, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrence and Jephson Robb to create new furniture pieces for the brand.

These designs were to "honor the company's heritage of fine wood-working and upholstery craftsmanship".  The designers were asked redesign a piece of furniture to show their interpretation of American design.

ANNE CHAIR BY ROSS LOVEGROVE

Ross Lovegrove based his design on a typical courthouse chair.  The chair's arms arc around the sitter to form a continuous curved backrest, while its legs splay outward towards the floor.
"These chairs were such a visible part of the American landscape because of their very powerful presence," said Lovegrove. "Using this historical reference, I wanted to create a chair that is contemporary and a reflection of my design vocabulary."
The chair is named after Anne Harper Berhnardt, one of the company's founders.
"As in all my work, the Anne chair is about sculpting a material: creating something that has a human dimension and looks interesting from any view," Lovegrove said.
HARPER CHAIR BY NOE DUCHAUFOUR-LAWRENCE
The chair designed by Paris-based designer, Noé Buchaufour-Lawrence, is based on the Windsor chair, which is not an American design.  Noé Buchaufour-Lawrence chose this chair because he saw this chair on the verandas of houses in Hollywood films.
"In the collective French memory, one vision of America is the view of a rocking chair sitting on an open porch," Duchaufour-Lawrance said. "It might be influenced by the movies, but the picture of a man sitting in a rocking chair on a front porch with his feet up on the balustrade, is quintessentially American."
Noé Buchaufour-Lawrence deconstructed the Windsor chair and rearranged the components, so the spindly elements in the back become struts that span between the top and bottom of the curved frame. The leather-upholstered seat is supported by four pieces of timber that extend seamlessly from the outer frame.

ALEX SOFA BY JEPHSON ROBB

Scottish designer Jephson Robb used the Chesterfield sofa as his starting point for the Alex sofa as Americans were credited with popularising its name.
"When I was growing up, the first piece of furniture that actually made an impression on me was a Chesterfield sofa," said Jephson Robb. "I was fascinated by all the buttons, and amazed that my head and feet didn't touch the arms when lying down. It seemed larger than life to me."
To update the design, Robb removed all but five of the buttons traditionally used all over the couch and used a horizontal strip along the back to tuft the fabric.
"The biggest design challenge for me was how to communicate quality and comfort without the repetition of buttons and tufting," Robb said. "I decided to go with a single uninterrupted belt that creates one continuous tuft as it traces the interior."

While taking my Materials Course, I had to source furniture as one of my exams.  I came across BERNHARDT and immediately fell in love with their furniture.

I am looking forward to incorporating their furniture into my future projects.

Level® - Sustainability Certification for Furniture

Atlantic Collection - Bernhardt

Olá!

Earlier this year, I attended a CEU Seminar on BIFMA Level Standard Furniture.

Level is the sustainability certification program for furniture.

Level® is the multi-attribute, sustainability standard and third-party certification program for the furniture industry. It has been created to deliver the most open and transparent means of evaluating and communicating the environmental and social impacts of furniture products in the built environment.
During the lecture, it was noted that after a building has gone through the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Certification Process it could all be nullified due to the fact the furniture used in the Interior Design of the building could contain emit harmful toxins or it may not be of a sustainable origin.

This makes so much sense!

I was so happy that I attended this seminar because it gave me one more tool for my design arsenal.

The images of furniture in today's blog have been identified by Level and has been vetted by an independent third party certifier and its numeric marking 1, 2, or 3 indicates what threshold of certification it has achieved.

Office Furniture - Sustainable and Eco-Friendly

Ola!!!!

As I prepare to start my Interior Design Diploma Program, I am starting to source
ECO-FRIENDLY/SUSTAINABLE FURNITURE.

My goal is to have a specialization in Commercial Spaces, which includes office environments.  I started looking at office furniture and learned that it should possess the following qualities:

  • Healthy
  • Eco-functional
  • Affordable
  • Refurbished
  • Recycled
  • No-VOC [Volatile Organic Compound]
  • FSC Certified - [Forest Stewardship Council - FSC is a global forestry certification system established for forests and forest products.]

These caught my eye:

HERMAN MILLER MIRRA CHAIR
Herman Miller's Mirra chair is designed to give great back support without fussy adjustments. The innovative design also gives good ventilation, making sitters more comfortable.  Mirra comes in an assortment of appealing colors, and is certified to MBDC Cradle to Cradle Gold and Silver, depending on configuration, as well as Greenguard. Mirra can help your organization earn points for LEED certification. The chair is made to be easily disassembled for recycling at the end of use.

HAG by izzydesign
HAG's Sideways conference chair (pictured) just won a Gold Award from NeoCon World's Trade Fair 2008. The innovative chair, which allows 180-degree movement, is made from 72% recycled content (in the four-star base model) or 51% recycled content (stackable model). The components of both models are 98% recyclable.

KNOLL OFFICE DESIGN
Knoll Office Design moves beyond the boring, ordinary cube with Knoll's flexible office systems. There are many styles, colors, finishes and configurations available, all made with Knoll's cleaner manufacturing.  The company uses water-based adhesives and UV-cured wood coating, and its products are virtually volatile organic compound (VOC)-free. Many are available in FSC-certified composite wood, as well as Greenguard certified.

I strongly feel that the more we do to protect the environment, it will be better for future generations.

Interior Design | The Kitchen 2013

Ola!!!

Recently, I received a link to a great article entitled: Interior Design: The Kitchen 2013 by

"The reign of the trophy kitchen is officially over. The dream kitchens of today aren't about the sexiest six-burner range or the most exotic countertop material. As cooking has returned to center stage and remodeling budgets have sobered, the kitchen island is nurturing family togetherness and reviving casual entertaining."

A Solis Betancourt & Sherrill kitchen in Virginia with mahogany cabinets that were bleached and cerused
to a driftwood gray color. (Marcos Galvany.)
The 2013 member survey by the National Kitchen & Bath Association identified a menu of some of today's top style choices in kitchens:
  1. WHITE PAINTED CABINETS
  2. QUARTZ COUNTERS
  3. MANY SHADES OF GRAY
  4. LED LIGHTING
  5. ELECTRONIC FAUCETS
  6. SATIN NICKEL FINISHES
  7. GLASS BACKSPLASHES
When I saw the image above of the kitchen done by Solis Betancourt & Sherrill, I immediately felt that I would love to have friends in the kitchen with me while I prepared a meal.  I have often noticed when I attend a party, it always ends up in the kitchen. I feel it is  because of its size and it is the place of great childhood memories.  Everyone always gravitates to that room in every one's home.

Do you feel that the latest trend in kitchen remodeling/design food takes center place and is now a place of nurturing?

Furniture | Carl Hansen & Son

This morning while thumbing through my current issue of ELLE DECOR, I came across an ad for CARL HANSEN & SON. I remembered pinning a lot of their items to one of my boards on PINTEREST and I said to myself, "You love their work so much, why don't you write about them in your blog!!!" So, here goes!!!

Carl Hansen opened his furniture workshop in Odense, Denmark in 1908. The company produced bespoke furniture - from dining room sets to bedroom suites. The combination of hand craftsmanship and national series production became the firm's hallmark.

SALESCO played an important role in promoting "Danish Modern" furniture internationally, "Danish Design" began to capture interest around the world.

Carl Hansen & Son likes to find and incorporate new designers. Today, Carl Hansen & Son produce furniture by the Danish design duo Strand & Hiass as well as Thomas Bo Kastholm, son of the famous architect Jörgen Kastholm.

SAFARI CHAIR

The Safari chair has been a design gem since its debut in 1933. With its simple functionality, it has become a true modern classic.
